Mexico & Central America
In February 1989 Audrey made a trip to Mexico and Central America. While in Mexico, she spent a day touring a small village, visiting with families and attending a celebration for a new water spigot. She helped to immunize children and inform mothers about oral rehydration treatment.
Following her visit to Mexico, Audrey toured Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatamala to help launch UNICEF's State of the World's Children report and to promote breastfeeding. In all three countries she pleaded the case for children in a series of meetings with top government officials. The most cheerful of all her trips, she was welcomed with signs that read "ˇBienvenida Audrey Hepburn!" wherever she went. She gave a lovely message on breastfeeding to the television cameras, in flawless Spanish. "Soy Audrey Hepburn. Soy Madre. La leche maternal es el major regalo que una madre puede dar a su hijo. Es para toda la vida." (I'm Audrey Hepburn. I'm a mother. Mother's milk is the best gift that a mother can give to her child. It's for his whole life.)
